Free Fabric-Plaid
Someone gave me some simple, rather plain colored plaid fabric. I’m not a huge fan of plaid but I never let free fabric go to waste so I decided to work on some quilt blocks.
I remember seeing a block many years ago(designed by Mary Graham I think) where bold colored plaid fabric was used to make cute sheep bodies. It was a long time ago and I don’t remember all the details but my flawed memory is what I based these blocks on.
I’ve used iron on applique paper to attach them but I still have to do the stitching around all around the figures. When I do that I’ll also add stitched details to the ears and legs.
Most people that have sat in on some of my card design classes know that I don’t like things “floating” in the air. I always ground the images by placing ground (or something) under them. I thought about using fabric and appliqueing grass or some type of ground under the sheep but instead I decided to use crayons and draw in the ground. I colored the ground under each sheep and added little sprigs of grass here and there. I then heat set the crayons with my iron to make it permanent. I think it gives the blocks a fun, whimsical look. I also plan on hand embroidering a couple of random butterflies and ladybugs on the blocks to complete the look. I might even add some clouds and maybe a “smiling” sun on a couple of the blocks. We’ll see. 🙂
I’ll post pictures along the way. Here’s a few pictures of some of the blocks I have so far.
That’s all for tonight. Sweet dreams everyone.
